Debating in the 21st Century

Travel and lodging costs are being replaced by teleconfrences, and lately by videoconferences. That’s something that we had been used to hear from the business world. And even though they have developed that to create software to supply the demands of today’s globalized world.

However, the technology development and its applicability is being very well used and exploited in Education. Because it’s free, or very low cost, it’s entertaining and the demands of the audience are as current as they can be. Today’s students as defined by Marc Prensky, are Digital Natives, and we, today’s teachers will aspire only to be Digital Immigrants.

I typically organize debates, group discussions and other teaching-learning strategies. However, it was my desire to organize a bilingual debate between students from different parts of the world.

I’m working on that, and I wanted to share my first experience. I had a Class Discussion between my 8th grade students in Colegio San Jorge de Miraflores in Lima-PERU and 9th grade students from Hunterdon High School, a school in New Jersey-USA. Parents and students gladly received the idea and the possibility of expansion and use of 21st century skills bringing down language and distance barriers, to accomplish speaking in different languages and with people from other realities.

That was the case last week, and even though it was a short discussion, we could only stay connected for 30 minutes, it was the first out a series of discussions to be done for the rest of they year. US students practiced their Spanish and discussion skills, and Peruvian students tested their English and discussion skills as well. While they were talking there was a simultaneous webcast camera broadcasting in this channel.

The topic in discussion helped me introduce them into the biology class of Human Reproductive System, it was: do you agree with natural conception only? Or, assisted reproductive techniques as well?

My special thanks to Jon Pennington who coordinated the event from the NJ side. Here is a little sample of that:

Perhaps in 10 years we will see the first generations of digital native teachers facing the challenges of the new generaltions of digital natives. How will they be called at that time, Digital Innates?

  1. I agree with natural conception and assisted reproductive techniques.
I agree with natural conception, because its a natural option to conceive babies, in a sequre way, 'cause you are sure that those babies will live with a family that will care about them and provide them a good home to live through theri life.
i also agree with assisted reproductive techniwues, but when they are uses in a good way, for example to make a couple that cannot conceive babies, into one who can, and make those babies happy and give them a good education and life.

  2. I think that assisted Reproductive techniques are the best choice because we can't only think on ourselves, there are other people that want to have a family but they can't, so assisted reproductive techniques is a good oportunity for them.

  3. I agree with natural conception & adoption. Because I think that there are too many children abandonned in the world and instead of paying a lot of money to give birth to a child that by natural conception wouldn't be born they can adopt them. So if people adopt children more homeless children will have a lovely family, good education and a support in their lifes that they didn't had before.

  4. I agree with natural conception, but not with assisted techniques, because there are lots of people that want to have kids and once they have them they abandon them or leave them in an orphanage, so why would people waste money when they can adopt kids and make them happy, In case the parents cannot concieve babies they can chose from those 2 options, but I think adopting is better than having assisted reproductive techniques

  5. I agree with the natural conception and assisted reproductive techniques.
I agree with the natural conecption because the newborns kids will look with the properties the father got and it will be more safely todo. I agree too in the assited reproductive techniques because they are some couples that cant conceive babies because of infertility and some other causes. They make some techniques to help this couples to have a newborn babie

  6. I think natural conception is better because you can conceive babies by your own . And you will feel how good is to be a parent, also you can have biological children .
But in the case of the artificial methods to conceive a baby they use different sperm and another DNA.

  7. I agree with natural conception because a lot of children without parents would like that someone adopt them instead that that someone use a lot of money to create a baby and because a lot of times the assisted reproductive techniques are used to give homosexual people a baby that is something that I don´t like because I think a baby need to grow up in an environment with a heterosexual couple that love each other.

  8. I agree with both,if you are fertil and you dont have the possibility to have a baby you can go to an especialist to help you
is not the same your own kid that and adopted. I really dont think its a bad idea.
If in the case that Im fertil I wouldnt think it twice because I want to have my own babys

  9. I agree with using assisted reproductive techniques because there are many people that want to have a baby but because of biological problems they can't, so this can help them. One example is my brother because he and his wife couldn't have a baby by natural conception but they decided to do artificial conception and it work. However, I also think that if a couple want to have sons but they can't, they can adopt a child and care for him or her.

  10. I think that natural conception is the best option to conceive a baby because you don't have to use medicine, vaccines, hormones and other things that could affect your health and health's baby.
But if you cannot conceive a baby and you want, you should choose reproductive techniques.
In conclusion I think that the people that don't have any problems to conceive babies should conceive them by natural conception.

  11. I agree with natural conception only because you don´t need the help of artificial techniques to have a child, If you are sterile there are many children that want a family and want to be adopted, I personally tihnk that assisted reproductive techniques are a bit selfish.

  13. I am in favor of using assisted reproductive techniques.
Assisted reproductive techniques is a good choice to cuples that can´t have babys with the natural conseption so that they could have babys with their own traits and also have the experience of be pregnant.
However, lots of children are abandoned every year and they deserve to be adopted and have a family.

In conclution, i am in favor of using assisted reproductive techniquies to have children but i also think that adoption is a very good option too.

  14. I agree with both methods because if we see this by natural conception we now that our sons will have our traits and will live in a family held by us, but, if we see this by the assisted reproductive techniques we see a great tool that would help us in case of infertility or any other problem at having babies, so assisted reproductive techniques will give every couple a good live with their sons. However there is a thing that is opposed to these techniques, which is adoption, because thousands of babies are left by their parents and are waiting for a couple to take care of them and is cheaper to adopt a child instead of following the techniques.
In conclusion, natural birth is good and will always remain good, assisted reproductive techniques are very helpful for problems when having babies, but if you don’t have the money to do it, is better to adopt a child that later will be considered part of the family.

  15. I am agree with both methods, natural conception and assisted reproductive techniques, because it is unfair that people that cannot have babies, unfertile people, can not feel that happiness. But if I were unfertile I would not use the assisted reproductive techniques because I think it has many risks.

  16. Gerardo--My students at St. John's (separate from World Leadership School) would love to participate in a debate like this on just about any topic. Please include us in the next one, if you have "spacea available."

  17. i agree with both natural and assisted repro.
In the natural conception, the baby´s health can be practically gaurenteed. As for assisted repro. techniques, it helps bring happiness to couples who cant concieve a baby on their own.

  20. I agree with both techniques. Because i believe you should have an option of choosing. In natural conception, you can be sure that the baby will be taken care of the right way. In assisted reproductive you can help a family that wants a baby more than yourself.

  21. I agree with natural conception and assisted reproductive techniques but I think that the couples that can't have babies should adopt instead of paying lots of money in artificial techniques because there are many children waiting to have parents.
(I know adoption involves many problems and decisions and also that the kid isn’t really yours)

  22. I think that assisted reproductive techniques are ok. Some people don't agree with it because there's a lot of kids that want to be adopted but some people want to have their own babies and plus, if the assisted technique exists, you can still adopt a baby so its up to the parents.
